Style classics: Calvin Klein

We’re now more used to seeing buxom, pouting models in Calvin Klein underwear ads, but the 1992 Kate Moss campaign that made the news this week was rather different.

The topless shoot by Herb Ritts, which the supermodel said caused her a near nervous breakdown when she was 18, came to define the Nineties androgynous look — and make Klein a fortune.

In 1982, Calvin Klein was the first ready-to-wear designer to launch his own underwear brand. But a decade later, with the iconic Moss shot, which also featured Mark Wahlberg, he became a real player.

Wahlberg posed in jeans with the waistband of his boxers hitched up so high that the Klein name was clearly visible — a look copied, and parodied — endlessly since.

Klein has moved with the times though — this season, Lara Stone features as the face and body of Naked Glamour, which includes T-shirt bras, lace shorts and slips... ‘designed to make a woman look even sexier than when naked’.
